Free food at the hub, no questions asked

Bread on Wednesday, fruit and veg on Friday, weekly meal deliveries, and where the food comes from.

Volunteers handing out fresh bread and greens across a table at the community hub

We have been on this corner for more than forty years, most of it as the Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre. The door at 754 Darling Street is open Monday to Friday, and the only thing anybody is expected to do on the way in is come in. Food is how most people meet us. It is easy to walk in for a loaf of bread, and much harder to walk in and say you are struggling. So we have arranged things so that nobody has to do the second one.

Two mornings a week, at the door

Breadnesday, every Wednesday. Fresh bread from 10am to noon. Take a loaf, stay for a cup of tea if you have the time. Nobody asks you anything.

Pop-Up Pantry, every Friday. Fruit and veg from midday to 1pm. Same arrangement: take what you need, no questions, no form, no proof of anything.

Neither is only for people on a low income. The hub is open to everyone who lives, works or spends time in the Inner West. Some people come because money is tight, some because the week is lonely, and plenty of people come for both reasons and never say which.

Meals to the door, for people who cannot get here

Cooked meals are delivered weekly to people who are finding it hard to cook for themselves, through our partnership with Good in the Hood. Organisations can refer, and you can also refer yourself. We need a few details so the driver can find you, and that is all.

The volunteers who deliver knock, and they stay a minute. Most of them live within a few streets of the person they are delivering to. The meal is the excuse; the visit is the point.

Rescued food, not surplus charity

Much of what we hand out arrives through OzHarvest, who collect good food that would otherwise be thrown away and deliver it to us free of charge. It is perfectly good food that was simply in the wrong place.

That matters for how it feels to take it. Nobody is being given someone else's leftovers. They are helping good food go where it should have gone in the first place.

If you would like a loaf, a bag of veg, a meal at the door, or just a cup of tea and a chair, come in. If coming in is the hard part, ring first. Call 02 9556 9500 or get in touch.
